The Bend Alpha sleeping bag liner is made from USA-made Polartec 60gsm Alpha Direct fabric. As far as I know this is the only Alpha Direct mummy-style liner on the market, and most likely the highest warmth to weight bag liner in the world. This game-changing bag or quilt liner does what other liners claimed to do, but because they are all flat sheets of fabric, they never could live up to their purpose. Insert the ultralight and lofty Alpha Direct fabric, and you can actually add a full comfort rating of warmth to your sleep system for the times when you need it, all with less weight and bulk than any conventional liner.
**Current color is NAVY BLUE**
The long weighs about 7.5 ounces, and the regular about 6.5 ounces. Packed size is about 4x4x6 inches.
We have tested this liner extensively. It is super, super comfortable even on bare skin. You barely even know its in your pack. It packs an impressive punch of warmth we found to be between 6-8 extra degrees of comfort. Its a great stand-alone ultralight sleeping bag for hot weather (Good to 65 degrees F). Its a great cacoon to use for daytime naps. Its a fantastic caccon and blanket to keep you warm and seperated from creepy trail couches and beds. It launders easily and dries very quickly.
With this bag liner there is no need to own multiple sleeping bags or quilts in most cases. You can own just one 30 or 40F degree bag, and pack this liner to boost your warmth only for the times you need it. For example, I own only a 30F degree limit (40 degree comfort) quilt now. When I am expecting night temperatures to be below 40 degrees F, I pack my Alpha bag liner and am good to below freezing. Add in my Alpha Direct pants and hoodie and I'm good to the mid-to-low 20's F.
Designed with a wide-mouth opening with cinchable elastic drawstring for both ease of entry/exit AND to maximize warmth.
One reason why you buy gear made by people that actually use it, is the little details the major brands would have no idea about. The logo on the liner is meant to go on your chest. This gives you a quick and reliable way to orient the garment when setting up camp, even in low light. You immediately know head, foot, top, bottom and inside/outside with just a glance.

FAQ's:
- why do you not make this in heavier fabric weights?
Because the 60 gsm has the best balance of weight, warmth and compressibility for this use. In heavier weights, their are diminishing returns, and certainly a point where it doesnt make a ton of sense to try to add that much insulation in a liner. For example, a regular length liner in 120gsm would weigh about 13 ounces and be quite bulky to pack around. You would do better, with a synethtic or down thin overquilt to use to add warmth to your kit. You would get more warmth for the weight and bulk. I really try to make items that are super practical and useful to the owner and there is definitely a point where, if you are needing a LOT more warmth for your sleep system, you should be looking for different solution.
- Will this liner work for quilts?
Yes. Super well in fact. Arguably that is the best use for it. The liner helps mitigate the drafts that quilts are very prone to. It gives you a barrier between your stinky body and clothes, and your mattress. It is cut so generously and is so light, that it doesnt constrict the movement of the quilt user. In fact, you really dont know its there.
- Why dont you make a top quilt version?
I may be doing that at some point. But for now the main reason is, the version I make is better for quilt users than a quilt version would be. I know it SOUNDS awesome to use a quilt liner with a quilt sleep system, but the reality is that the Alpha Direct liner in quilt form doesnt stay in place and ends up in a wad under your quilt. The only soluton to this would be to add pad straps and clips. Then you got two pad and strap kits to carry and frankly, why?
-Can I use this Alpha Direct liner as a stand-alone sleep system?
In an emergency or in very hot weather, yes. Indoors, yes. Other than that, no. For Alpha Direct to be thermally efficient, it needs a cover of some kind over it. This is why it is so fantastic as a LINER, but sucks as a stand-alone sleep system. If you are looking for a super light warmer weather sleep system, you would do better looking at a 50 degree down or synthetic quilt.
In theory you could have an Alpha Direct quilt or liner, and use a nylon shell covering of some kind to trap the body heat and keep the wind from cutting through, but come on now. You are one nylon shell away at that point, from just having a conventional quilt or sleeping bag which would be vastly more efficient.

I used this on a recent trip in Yosemite where the temps at night went from 30-45 degrees. I don't like sleeping in bags so stuffed my Nemo Tensor into this to sleep on top of. Way more comfortable than any other liner I've used. Would love to see a blanket version of this without the under side (bag) and side loops to connect my pad and into my quilt straps. Let me know :) Thank you
I bought this liner to use with a summer weight sleeping bag so that it can be used on early fall trips. This is much nicer (and lighter) than any liner from REI I was considering. It’s very warm, light and packs away in a day hike bag easily. This could also be used alone in the summer as a light covering.
Magnet was very communicative, offering a secondary color option after ordering. I would not go anywhere else for another liner if I needed one.
Really like this liner, lightweight but cozy. Magnet contacted me to ask if I was okay with gray material instead of black which I thought was nice. Very high quality, I've ordered alpha direct fleece from a few different companies and the quality on Magnet Designs is way up there. I highly recommend as I believe this is the only alpha direct sleeping bag liner on the market.
I haven't got to test it on a camping trip yet, however I did test it at home. It has the comfort of a home blanket, and when I wake up I don't have to worry about my sleeping bag sticking to me if I happen to sweat. I also like how it doesn't weigh much, and the extra 6-8 degrees of warmth is a nice plus.
Can’t wait to add this liner to my winter sleep system. I’ve tested it in the house and my word it’s comfy. Amazing quality piece of gear.
