These ultralight Polartec Alpha Direct pants can do just about anything. Camp Pants? CHECK. Joggers? CHECK. Base layer? CHECK. Loungewear? CHECK. Hiking pants? CHECK. Pajamas? Why not? Crazy cozy, breathable, ultralight, hydrophobic and compressible. Available in THREE fabric weights: The 60 gsm for the minimalist and hardcore gram counter, the 90 gsm for more warmth and less sheerness, and the 120 gsm for cold conditions. All thicknesses feature a spandex waist band with elastic drawstring, two oversized front pockets, a crotch gusset for better range of motion, and spandex ankle cuffs.
There are other Alpha Direct pants out there, but they are typically just two tubes of fabric with an elastic waist band. No drawstring, no comfy spandex waist and ankle cuffs, and certainly no pockets. My Alpha Direct pants are actual livable garments that work as well off the trail as on it, while still hitting some eye-popping anti-gravity numbers.
When comparing these to my UL leggings, I definitely recommend the full pants if you are going to spend a lot of time wearing these. Pockets are just, natural. Your hands automatically go there. They complete the garment. But the UL version is great for under layers or for a camp-only layer where you just want the warmth and comfort in the lightest and most compact form.
A medium in the 60 gsm weighs a feathery 4.5 ounces. A medium in the 90 gsm weighs about 5.5 ounces. A medium in the 120 gsm weighs 7 ounces. Add or subtract about 1/4 ounce for each size bigger or smaller.
The price goes up $5 with each increase in fabric weight you select. So it is $105 for 60 gsm, $110 for 90 gsm, and $115 for 120 gsm.
(To save some weight, if you dont care to have pockets, please check out my new UL Alpha joggers)
Hand-made to order in Bend, Oregon.
A note on sizing: If in any doubt about your sizing, SIZE UP. Polartec Alpha fabric has almost no stretch. You need to have some room to move. If between sizes at all, size up.
See sizing in product photos.
For an athletic fit, select your size true to measurements. For a relaxed or baggy fit, size up.
The inseam length will be to order so just tell me what you want in the "inseam" box. If you dont fit neatly into a standard size, pick the closest and in the "notes" on the order page, tell me your actual measurements and I will customize these for you. Reach out if you need help.
We really like these pants in the 60 gsm for the most compact and light, but still full-featered option. This weight is best as a base layer or camp pants. This weight is a great option for a thru-hike given that it takes up so little space and weighs so little, its easy to justify carrying it. The fabric is a little sheer in this weight so.... underwear or overwear required in public.
The 90gsm is a fantastic choice for an in-between. Still great on a thru-hike especially when some of the trip will be quite cold, and reduces the sheerness that the 60gsm tends to have.
The 120gsm is just crazy warm and cozy. These are as thick or thicker than any fleece joggers, but half the weight, more breathable and compressible. We like this thickness for winter and shoulder season camping, joggers, and loungewear. The fabric is no longer noticeably sheer in this weight.

So warm despite the weight (~4.3oz)! Kept me warm on a chilly overnight in the mountains, I was actually sweating in my quilt. Love the added pockets and drawstring. The 60g weight is see through as expected (I have a hoodie from another brand so this was not a surprise). I did size up knowing I’d be wearing as sleep clothes and under my rain and snow pants but I’d probably order my true size if I wanted to wear under tighter fitting clothing. Thanks for shipping so fast!!
There are a lot of alpha pants out there, but I don't think any can compare to these. The craftsmanship is superb and every detail well thought out. The pockets and cinch waist were great practical additions. I wore these around camp and layered a pair of Merino leggings on top when the temps dropped into the 20s (F) one night. Was completely warm in and out of my sleeping bag. These are now a must have in my bag.
These are amazing alpha direct pants. The quality is over the top awsome. The fit is perfect. They are super cute and very functional with the large pockets and draw string waist and ankle cuffs. They are super soft and mega comfee to sleep in or whatever else you want to use them for. I can not say enough good things about them. Very highly recommend these pants in warm or cold temps. They don't get stinky after several days of using and regulate my temp perfectly and come in at just over 6oz.
Great product. I was immediately impressed. They're well made and perform well in Chicago cold. I use these as a mid layer (over leggings but under shell pants) on winter bike rides). Premium, thoughtful details: the elastic around the ankles keeps ankles warm and sturdy pockets can securely hold an iPhone & AirPods. This was my first Magnet Designs purchase and I'm really happy and I look forward to buying a Sisters Hoody!
Bought both. Wore Pants under MEC zip rain pants. Wife used gaiter. Very comfortable in windy feels like 3 degrees F walk on snowy trail. Gaiter covered nose tip and mouth and took sting out of wind. Great products; warm; weigh almost nothing.
